Being an SEO passionate myself , I hate when myths are spread about my subject. The fun part is that these myths are getting crazier every passing year. Some are based on partial reality while some got spread because it was quite difficult to prove what particular action cause the search engine position change or reaction.

It might sometime happen that you make a change in a page and few days later its ranks increases. You might imagine that it happen because of the action you under took. But it can’t be true in all cases. This is probably why there are so many myths being followed in the SEO industry. Below are the top 5 of those myths.

Myth 1 . You Should Consider Submitting Your URL to Search Engines !

As soon as you start reading about affordable organic SEO packages, you will find that they do an act of submitting a website or URL to search engine. The truth is, it was valid once and helped as well, but it is now at least 5 or 6 years that this is no more a necessary. Search engines have developed a lot and therefore crawl pages on its own.

Myth 2 . You Need a Sitemap

If you hired the right person to build a website, it would certainly be crawler friendly and you would not need any sort of Google sitemap. It although won’t hurt if you have one. But it is a strong fact that having one is not going to help you in ranking better at search results.

Myth 3 . Your Website Needs to be Updated Frequently

If you frequently update your pages, it would increase the crawl rate of your website, not its rankings. If your site needs no change, don’t make any changes by the thought that search engines would like it. On the contrary to this fact, several top websites on Google haven’t been touched even for years.

Myth 4 . PPC Ads Hurt Rankings

This is quite funny because half of the SEO executive think that running adwords would hurt their organic rankings and drop their rankings and half of them believe it would rank them up. For your information, none of this is true.

Myth 5 . You Will Be Banned if You Ignore Guidelines

There is no such guideline in Google webmaster that is not a common sense. Although you can surely read them if you have time, but it is not mandatory to be SEO. You just don’t need to do anything that is strictly against search engine guidelines.
